Either water or hot water extract of Yaeyama Chlorella was added to human skin fibroblasts. The results showed that the addition of water extract significantly facilitated the growth of fibroblasts while the effect of hot water extract was marginal. Additionally, water and hot water extracts of Yaeyama Chlorella were demonstrated to be equally effective in activating gene expression of hyaluronan synthetase HAS2 (Hyaluronan synthase 2).
Rats were fed a diet containing Yaeyama Chlorella powder (Yaeyama Chlorella group) or a normal diet (control) following induction of diabetes. Glucose was administered in a fasting state, and blood sugar levels were monitored (sugar tolerance test) Thirty minutes after glucose intake, the Yaeyama Chlorella group showed significantly lower blood sugar levels than the control group, and integration of blood sugar levels over a given time (“area under the curve” (AUC)) was also lower than that of the control group. These results suggest that Yaeyama Chlorella intake suppresses glucose-induced elevation in blood sugar. Given that elevated blood sugar is a hallmark of diabetes, Yaeyama Chlorella intake might contribute to the prevention of diabetes and its complications, and relieve its symptoms.
