Ingestion of Euglena may alleviate symptoms of cedar pollen allergy in mice

Mice that ingested Euglena scratched their nose less frequently than did those that did not ingest Euglena. This result suggests that ingestion of Euglena is effective in alleviating some of the symptoms of cedar pollen allergy, of which nose scratching is a typical behavior in mice suffering from this allergy.

What is pollen allergy?

Pollens may cause allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eye. The immune system protects the organism from invasion by foreign agents. However, sometimes, the immune response is directed to harmless substances such as a pollens and certain foods, causing allergic reactions. The number of individuals suffering from allergies has been increasing in recent years due to various factors such as changes in lifestyle habits, diet, increased exposure to allergens found in natural environments, and improved hygiene.
